My daily life living in the suburbs of Tokyo, Japan

Soup for lunch, homemade pudding, and my first homemade mayonnaise

Tomato soup

I decided to start making my own lunch to improve my diet.

Until now, I've been going to ramen shops or buying bento boxes and rice balls at the convenience store.

From now on, I'll make hearty soups and bring them to work.

This time, I made soup using canned tomatoes.

I threw in leftover vegetables that I had in the fridge.

Onions, bell peppers, carrots, lotus root, and enoki mushrooms.

I also added sausage.

I used a stock cube that contains MSG for flavoring the soup.

MSG is quick and convenient, but I'm thinking of replacing it with kombu or katsuobushi.

This is purely out of curiosity on my part.

Maybe it's a reaction from having eaten so much convenience store food.

I want to cut down on MSG and regain the palate that can truly taste the natural flavors of ingredients.

eggs

One afternoon.

I made pudding at the request of my kids.

It's been a while since I made pudding.

I used to make it sometimes when my children were younger.

It was unpopular because the caramel was more bitter than store-bought products.

My kids have probably forgotten all about that.

This time, I tried making it with simple ingredients.

Just eggs, milk and sugar.

My kids were fascinated by the process of making pudding.

Stainless steel pot

To firm it up, I steam it in a pot.

The sound of the dishes rattling around in the pot is soothing.

Caramel sauce

It was nerve-racking when I made caramel.

I'm always afraid of the splash when I add the water.

Steamed and solidified pudding

The pudding has solidified.

I steamed it to make it firmer to suit my child's taste.

It seems to have worked well.

Pour the sauce over the pudding

Caramel sauce on the bottom or on top?

In my house, we eat it straight from the container, so I pour it on top.

Homemade Mayonnaise

The other day, I tried making homemade mayonnaise for the first time.

"That's a lot of oil……"

I couldn't help but say it out loud.

I made this for my diet, but now I'm not sure if I should eat it.

This time I used vegetable oil, but next time I'll switch to a healthier oil.

I tried homemade mayonnaise, and it was different from store-bought mayonnaise.

It's a little oily and lacks flavor.

It needs to be improved.
